Is The Term ‘BBW’…a Bad One?

…I’ve been using the term “BBW” for 14 years now, ever since going to my first size-acceptance party in early 2004. I’ve been using it because that’s what I was told was the name, term, and descriptor for plus size women in the 2000’s. And for a decade or so, it seemed like something everyone agreed with.

Until recently, when on social media, plus size women from Facebook to The ‘Gram started to diss the word. Myself, and others…while socializing in BBW groups, would get told not to use the word that much, or stop using it altogether.

I thought that maybe it was a local thing, since the majority of size acceptance groups I’m a member of are based in Ohio, my home state. However, I saw globally distributed articles like this one, and this one too, and I realized that the term BBW may be unpopular now everywhere.

I read both of these articles, and a few more, and it hit me that the concept of fetishization is real. Basically, many women in the body positive community are leery of men who will sexualize them strictly for their weight. And, with the word BBW arguably originating from porn, (many, but not all) women now seem to want to retire the word.

Obviously, I’m a dude, so I really don’t have a say on whether the word gets burried in the “Words We Just Don’t Use Anymore” graveyard. That’s for women to decide. But…I am curious about what you, the reader, thinks.

Hey (awesome, cool, wonderful) Reader. Do you think BBW is a bad term? Talk to us.

  1. First, I think it’s awesome that you care enough to ask. I don’t take offense to it. To me, it’s just a descriptor that happens to have an acronym. Many people have preferences for people to whom they’re attracted.
